About Horizontal Falls

The Horizontal Falls are not true waterfalls; the phenomenon is created by immense tidal currents speeding through tight coastal gorges. Described by David Attenborough as “one of the greatest natural wonders of the world”, there are only two of these horizontal waterfalls on the planet, both of them here at Talbot bay in the Buccaneer Archipelago of the Kimberley.

The awesome twin ridges of the McLarty Range have created two natural reservoirs that are between 6 and 8 kilometres long and are connected to the sea by 2 small gorges. The most seaward opening is around 20 metres wide and the more inland gorge is around 12 metres wide. Combine this with tidal flows that can reach 10 metres and it is easy to see how the amazing Horizontal Falls came to be.

And the best thing about these unique Australian landforms? They are navigable, as in, you can drive a boat through them.
