About Parliament House

It is rumored that, at the time of construction, Parliament House was the most expensive building in the world coming in at over $1.1 billion AUD. On the 9th of May, 1988 Queen Elizabeth II opened this marvelous centrepiece of Australian architecture and culture. Including both the House of Representatives and the Senate and offices for our Federal Ministers, the Australian Federal Parliament has been given a world class forum for running our democracy.

Located on a 32 hectare site amidst landscaped grounds, the structural design is based on the shape of two boomerangs and is topped by an 81-metre flagpole. The building’s facade includes elements from the Old Parliament House alluding to a continuity of practice. Although a working building many of the 4700 rooms are open to the public every day of the year (except Christmas Day).

Always intended to be open to the public, Parliament House attracts around 1 million visitors each year. The public entrance opens into a grand foyer and then into the Great Hall, a space for parliamentary, federal and public functions that features a magnificent tapestry of an Arthur Boyd painting, of which the original is displayed in the building’s art gallery.

All this combines to make Parliament House one of Australia’s most significant and popular cultural landmarks.
