Port Lincoln is located on the Eyre Peninsula approximately 280 km, as the crow flies, from Adelaide, the State Capitol of South Australia. To self-drive from Adelaide you can either take the scenic route of 7.5 to 9.5 hours or jump a ferry which knocks it down to 5 hours drive time. Fear not though, there are daily bus services and domestic flights. Adelaide Airport is serviced by domestic and international flights.
Like many destinations in Australia, there is just about any type of accommodation you could desire in and around Port Lincoln. Resorts, Hotels, Motels, Cottages, Cabins, Apartments, Holiday Homes, Villas, Inns, Farm Stays, Hostels, Caravan and Camping Sites, there’ll be something to you and your budget.
Known as the “Seafood Capitol of Australia”, this famous landmark is renowned for its fauna in more ways than one. Home to possibly the largest commercial fishing fleet in the country, there is a major aquaculture industry as well, farming tuna, kingfish, oysters, abalone, mussels and even experimental farming of seahorses and lobsters. And that’s just in the water, the land based farming of wool, lambs, beef, wheat, barley, oats, and more combines with the aquaculture and fishing fleet at Port Lincoln and surrounds in what is possibly the Australia’s biggest primary production centre.
That’s exciting but it’s the native fauna that people flock here to see, or should I say swim with? Sure the nearby 60,000 hectares of National Parks with their wide variety of flora and fauna are stunningly beautiful; the waters of Spencer Gulf and the Great Australian Bight are spectacular for going sailing, fishing or scuba diving but it is swimming with four species of animals that makes this Australian Landmark like no other.
Take your choice for adventure, swim with Bluefin Tuna, swim with Australian Sea Lions, swim with Dolphins or go cage diving with Great White Sharks, or of course, all of the above.
